+Q: I want to accurately measure my waist. What’s the best way to do it?

A- In order to measure your waist size, all you need is a tape measure and a mirror so you can see what you’re doing.

1. It’s essential to remember that different styles will require a different measurement. Higher waisted styles, often vintage designs and trousers with a wider cut, will sit on your natural waist, above the belly button. Many women’s jeans will have a lower rise and sit nearer the hip. You’ll need to measure your waist size accordingly.
2. When you know where you’re measuring (low or high waist – see diagram), remove your clothing (you can keep your underwear on).
3. Take your tape measure and wrap it around yourself and pull it so that it’s snug without digging in. The reading at the point the tape meets is your waist size.

Your reading will be accurate, but if you’re in any doubt about the fit, refer to our women’s size chart for more detail on women’s waist measurements.

+Q: I’m looking for dresses that fit me well around the hips. What’s the best way to measure my hip size accurately?

A- Women’s dress sizes can vary from style to style, but as with all clothes sizes, accurate measuring will certainly give you a good head start. You’ll need a tape measure and a mirror so you can see what you’re doing.

1. When measuring the circumference of your hips, you’ll need to make sure the tape is going over the fullest part of your buttocks.
2. When you’ve worked out exactly where you’re measuring (this is where the mirror helps), remove your clothing (you can keep your underwear on).
3. Start at one hip and wrap the tape measure around your rear, around the other hip, and back to where you started. The reading where the tape meets is your hip size.
